ACT! 2011 has improved the Import and Start Up Experience!

Have you ever been confused with all the bells and whistles in your CRM? Well, that’s one of the reasons ACT has been so popular and has a huge fan base that just refuse to leave them. ACT is just simple!

Now though, ACT has improved that experience even more! ACT has focused on improving User Adoption by simplifying 2 key areas: The Welcome Page and Importing Data

Welcome Page

(1)    Instead of hundreds of options, the Welcome Page now focuses your attention on 3 optionsCreating a database, Opening an existing database, and ACT Support and Help videos.

(2)    ACT has created numerous highly visible feature videos.

Importing Data

(1)    Users can now import directly from Excel, not just a CSV or a TXT file. Now you can use .XLS or .XLSX files too!

(2)    ACT now gives you the option for a Typical Import (fast configuration) vs a  Custom Import (flexible configuration).

(3)    You might think, “I always need it to be flexible though.” Well, ACT addresses that now by providing automatic interpretation of your field labels. So whether you call a column “Company”, “Firm” or “Business Name”, it will be imported into the proper field!  That’s smart – and easy! In fact, if you want to update or append the synonym list, you can easily do so – it’s just an XML file!

(4)    You can even create new fields on the fly! You now have a One Click option to create fields from the import source file. And the Layout designer will launch if new fields are added! Smart!

Best Import Tool for ACT 2010

MergeAdmin by ASDSLooking for the best Import tool for ACT 2010? We recommend MergeAdmin by ASDS.

We have been using this “Excel into ACT” import utility for the last 4 years.  It is fast, robust, and it allows you to (a) import into a field only if that ACT field is empty and (b) import into an ACT field only if the Excel field contains data. That way, you’ll never overwrite ACT data with a “blank”.

Lastly, the User Interface is easy to understand. It even lets you save all the import settings so that you can quickly run an update when needed.

The one drawback is that it doesn’t allow for import into custom sub-entities.
